Dietitian vs Nutritionist
There are two types of nutrition professionals working in Hong Kong – Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist.
A registered dietitian is a certified dietitian who has undergone strict assessment and whose work is closely regulated by accredited dietitian associations worldwide. HKCDA is a group of registered dietitians who are passionate about providing professional nutrition therapy for the community, with the purpose of optimizing people’s health and quality of life.
RECOGNITION:
.Clinical experience recognized by the medical regulatory organisation,
.and have professional knowledge to prescribe medical nutrition therapy as a preventive or treatment of various diseases
such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity etc.
QUALIFICATION:
Hold a Bachelor/ Master/ Postgraduate Diploma/ Doctorate in Nutrition and Dietetics,
And hold any of the following accreditation:
.Dietitians Australia
.Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)in the United State
.Provincial Dietetic Registration in Canada
.Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the United Kingdom
WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
.Eligible to individualised medical nutrition therapy as a preventive or treatment of various diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, etc
.Analyze and design the food menu and meal plan for individuals, food supplier and kitchen
.Promote Public Health nutrition
.Provide nutritional information for the public e.g. talks, workshops and nutrition brochures
.Undertake Academic research related to nutrition
RECOGNITION:
.May not have relevant recognition and clinical experience
QUALIFICATION:
Hold a Bachelor/ Master/ Postgraduate Diploma/ Doctorate) in:
Nutrition Sciences; or
Food and Nutrition
Do not accredited/ regulated by any dietitian association/ registration system
WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Do not have recognised clinical experience, ineligible to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy
.Promote Public Health nutrition- Provide nutritional information for the public e.g. talks, workshops and nutrition brochures
.Undertake Academic research related to nutrition
